WISE encore |

Title: Deep Ocean Exploration in a Global Technology Environment

Speaker: William Kohnen

Abstract: In 2019, the Limiting Factor submersible (LF) accomplished a unique feat of making repeated dives to the Mariana Trench, and deep dives to the deepest point in all five of the world’s oceans. Spearheaded by the private sponsorship of Victor Vescovo, the project drew from expertise from around the world, extending the boundaries of human exploration. The scope encompassed not only design and fabrication technologies for underwater vehicles, but also relied of specialty parts and components, testing facilities, inspection and certification, surface support logistic and the scientific community. This type of exploration has been unmatched for more than 50 years and it inspired many national institutions to pursue deep ocean exploration for scientific (and non-scientific) purposes. The manned submersible industry has evolved over the past 25 years and today an international community of engineers, fabricators and scientists offers connectivity and results that was not possible before. As peak technologies become national assets, or are guarded as such, it requires much duplication of effort at national levels. This presentation will review technological breakthroughs and challenges in deep ocean exploration and will look at the key elements that lead to the LF project. This will review historical backgrounds and also explore the level of international participation that lead to the success of the mission and what lessons can be drawn from this unique approach.

William Kohnen is president and Chief Executive Officer of HYDROSPACE Group Inc., a California company expert in manned submersibles and a wide spectrum of pressure vessels for human occupancy. Mr. Kohnen has 30 years of engineering experience combining expertise in electrical and mechanical engineering serving the aerospace, medical and subsea industries with a primary mission to promote new technologies for the management of world oceans and industrial infrastructure. Mr. Kohnen is chairman of the Marine Technology Society (MTS) committee on Manned Underwater Vehicles for the past 16 years and was made MTS Fellow in 2014. He has published many papers and articles on the state of the MUV industry. He is chairman of the Annual MUV Symposium held during the Underwater Intervention conference, in the USA, that brings the international MUV community together. Mr. Kohnen is a member of the ASME PVHO Safety Standards Committee, a member of the ABS Special Committee on Rules for Underwater Vehicles, Industry representative for DNVGL Underwater Technology Rules review, member of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS), the Aerospace Medical Society and was member of the Deep Submersible Pilot association. Mr. Kohnen is Co-Founder of Seamagine Hydrospace Corp which designs and produces manned submersibles since 1995, with eleven vehicles distributed around the globe.
